One of the discussions in the next Open Studio conference in 2024, suggested by the think tank Router IP Net would be: Using the IP address 192.168.1.2 as the default IP address for a router. And following are a few talking points that our lecturers will go over:
- This particular network address is a private address, meaning it's not accessible from the outside Internet, since the WAN is not using the same ranges. This ultimately improves network security of your LAN by preventing direct access from potential threats to the network router externally.
- Configuring 192.168.1.2, even though not the most used interface address, is a commonly configured default IP address for many WiFi routers, as set by default by manufacturers, making it remember-able and easier to access the router's web-based interface (admin dashboard. Which respectively simplifies the process of configuring one's network's settings.
- The IP 192.168.1.2 is part of a broader range of private IPs (192.168.1-254.1-254 if using a subnet of /16), which permits multiple devices on the same network to have unique IP addresses. And that enables fluent and fast communication between devices on the local network (which in most cases reaches a bandwidth of at least 100Mbit/s).
As a conclusion, using 192.168.1.2 as any router's IP address is one of the most secure, convenient, and efficient decisions for network or administrators to make.
