FALL 2019 OPEN STUDIO TOURS

Studio Hosting

Opening a working studio to strangers

A Southern Arizona open studio is still a workplace. Visitors should be able to walk from the driveway to the newest piece without crossing a wet glaze table or a pile of shipping crates. Guest-ready does not mean a white-box gallery. It means a clear path, one chair that is not holding tools, and a surface where someone can set a glass without sliding a print.

The day before a mapped weekend, most hosts do three small jobs. First, they choose which room is public and which room stays closed. Second, they lift dust from pedestals and door handles so the work is what people notice. Third, they stage a post-tour cleanup kit (bags, a broom, a tray for cups) so Monday morning is not a scavenger hunt.
If you also keep a room in another city between seasons, use the same standard there: a guest-ready sitting spot and a reset after the last visitor. The point is hospitality that still leaves the studio able to work. Checklists and sign-in sheets live on the Planning page. Questions go to Contact.

Hosting questions

Do I have to empty the whole house?
No. Mark a public path and close doors that are not part of the tour. A guest-ready room is enough if the walk to it is obvious.
What counts as post-tour cleanup?
Cups, sign-in clipboards, packing paper, and the extra chairs you borrowed. Leave the worktables clear enough for the next firing or print run.
